Kansai
Where to Stay in Kansai
Most people base in Osaka or Kyoto. Osaka is cheaper and more central for day trips — and the food spreads across a half-dozen neighborhoods beyond Dotonbori. Kyoto is the pick if temples, gardens, and quieter neighborhoods matter more to you than nightlife. Kobe is 22 minutes from Osaka by train and works as a day trip or a night out. Nara is 35-45 minutes from either city and worth the full day.
Beyond the three cities, Kansai has onsen towns, a UNESCO pilgrimage trail, and temple stays in the mountains. Budget 4-5 days for the region. Business hotels in Osaka and Kyoto run ¥8,000-15,000/night. The Kansai Wide Area Pass covers trains to every destination on this page.
